02 INTRODUCTION Prysmian Cables & Systems is well placed to meet the future demands of information transfer being one of the world’s leadingmanufacturers of data and instrumentation cables. The INFORM@X ® range of data and instrumentation cables include multicore and multipair configurations to suit specific applications and environments. P20 TYPE DATA CABLES A range of 24 AWG cables having pairs with flexible conductors, colour coded insulation and overall screening, used in datatransmission, where interconnecting cables of small size and low capacitance are required with minimum signal distortion andgood crosstalk attenuation. P20 cables are suitable for use with both analogue and digital systems operating at highmodulation rates over long distances.P20 cables are recommended for use as balanced interface cables connecting Data Terminal Equipment and DataCommunication Equipment in systems complying with EIA Standard RS485, RS422 and RS449 data transmission. P21 TYPE DATA CABLES An alternative range of 24 AWG cables comprising a number of single wires of flexible conductors, colour coded insulation andoverall screening. Typical use for these inter-connecting cables is in data systems which require cables of small size and lowcost, operating over short distances at low modulation rates, in an unbalanced mode. They are recommended for use asinterface cables connecting Data Terminal Equipment and Data Communication Equipment in systems complying with EIAStandard RS423, RS232C and 4-20 mA loop circuits. P31 TYPE DATA CABLES A range of 20 AWG cables comprising a number of finely stranded single wires, with colour coded insulation and a flexibleoverall braid screen. These cables are designed for connecting equipment in environments of frequent movement or vibration. P50-P56 TYPE INSTRUMENTATION CABLES The P50-P56 range is a particular group of pair or triple (0.5 mm ² or 1.5 mm²) cables with numbered cores for the interconnection of electrical instruments and control equipment in industry and processing plants.Typical uses are for interconnecting: • Electrical measuring devices to instrument panel• Instrument to instrument• Field bus RS485 and RS422 data links• Electrical sensing devices• Control cabinets to supervisory consoles and panels• Remote auxiliary contacts to supervisory indicators• Telemeters to recorders and annunciators and for general transmission of electrical signals in any systems of remote control, indication, telemetering, monitoring and analysis where a rugged communication type cable is required • Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD) Typical wiring systems will use multipair cables to connect control room equipment to junction panels in field junction boxes.Single pair cables are used to connect junction panels to field devices. P50-P55 cables are suitable for use in those areas whereit is necessary to provide protection from: • Interference to the transmission signal by other electrical circuits• Physical damage to the cable by including in the designs various screens and armours• Intrinsically safe designed cables are coloured blue for easy identification ALTERNATE SUPPLY The tables on the following pages list the most commonly required data and instrumentation cables. Cable configurations notlisted can also be supplied. These include: • Alternative core or element combinations• Cables finished with a nylon jacket as a protective barrier against termite or ant attack• Steel wire armoured versions OTHER CABLES IN THE PRYSMIAN CABLES & SYSTEMS RANGE Prysmian Cables & Systems can supply a total cable solution for the industrial environment, from our extensive range of energycables to indoor and outdoor LAN cables, plus a full range of optical fibre cables for both indoor and outdoor use. They are usedextensively in PLC environments and also for connecting computerperipheral equipment such as printers and modems. Due to the greaternoise immunity of twisted pairs, P20s are able to carry higher dataspeeds than multi-conductor cables. They are available with collective(CS) or element and collective (ESCS) screening.INFORM@X ® P21 cables are overall screened (CS) multicores for use in limited distance unbalanced mode. They are used in serial datatransmission such as RS232 and 4-20 mA loop circuits. Other cable configurations not shown in the table are available. These cables are not to be regarded as power cables for the directconnection of equipment to mains power supplies INSTALLATION CONDITIONS CABLE CHARACTERISTICS

14 GENERAL INFORMATION ElementAn element consists of a pair (or triple) formed by twisting the wires together. Elements are twisted with different twist lengths toreduce interference between them. Cable coreThe cable core is formed by assembling the required number of wires or elements together. Screened element (ES)The twisted element is wrapped with aluminium/polyester laminate as a tape with the bare tinned copper wire laid in contact withthe aluminium side of the tape. A further layer of polyester tape is applied over the core.
