The City of Sydney has installed twenty-three custom made Catenary mounted luminaires at a height of 14m along the centre of Pitt Street Mall in Sydney.
The custom made Catenary luminaires were designed by Haron Robson Lightmatters and Tony Caro Architecture and manufactured by 3S Lighting. Each luminaire is a cylinder approximately 3.3m tall with a roll formed and welded aluminum housing at the top and bottom.
In the center of each luminaire is a 2.6m one piece opal polycarbonate cylindrical diffuser. Behind the diffuser 3S have mounted twenty-seven Osram “Traxon 1PXL Strip” RGB LEDs in three vertical runs at 120° spacing, on 9 levels. The Traxon RGB LED Strips are DMX controlled and provide backlit colour effects to the opal cylinder to create over 16 million additive colours. These colour effects are controlled by an Osram E:cue Butler XT DMX controller.
Dynamic RGB LED lighting sequences are achieved within the height of each luminaire and from one luminaire to the next luminaire, to create coloured ribbons of light above the mall. This programmable system allows for the creation of countless lighting shows and animated lighting effects for various dates of the year and on special festive occasions.
In addition to the decorative lighting component the luminaire also provides general illumination to meet the AS1158.3.1 statutory lighting requirements as requested by the City of Sydney. The bottom of each luminaire is equipped with a custom designed 3S downlight reflector and a 150W Osram Powerball Ceramic Metal Halide lamp to provide this general illumination.
The control of this general lighting has been carefully integrated in the Haron Robson Lightmatters design so that the whole system is under DMX control. The luminaires are IP65 and are suspended on a twin wire Catenary arrangement, each luminaire is equipped with internal concealed fixing hardware to allow easy fixing and removal from the top and bottom Catenary wires.
Tony Caro Architecture worked in close collaboration with 3S Lighting in the production of twenty-one standard luminaries and two structurally enhanced luminaires; which provide vertical bracing between the top and bottom Catenary wires at the beginning and end of the wire suspension system.
The luminaires are installed at approximately 8m intervals and illuminate approximately 180m of the Pitt St Mall.
