Both locally designed products were developed for the interior architecture and lighting design markets have received recognition at the 2013 NSW IES Awards Dinner.

The winning Lumiance eye-ON received the award of Excellence in the conceptual design category whilst the Concord Rotos was awarded a Commendation in luminaire working model category. Both have been locally developed by Concords interior architecture product management in conjunction with Concords Architectural engineering team. Rotos is assembled at the facilities of Sylvania Lighting Australasia (SLA) as will be eye-ON once in full production. Representatives of the company’s product management and engineering teams were on hand at the awards ceremony to receive the accolades.
The Lumiance eye-ON received the IES Award of Excellence in the conceptual design category.
This stylish luminaire is designed to be a direct replacement to traditional halogen lamped spotlights, predominately Dichroic Halogen spots, 35w MR16 up to 75 Watt AR111 in both spot or flood versions.
The key features of the eye-ON include a simple compact design with a variable beam optic. The optic is easily adjusted to give a narrow to extra wide beam by means of a thumb slider. The solid state fixture is deliberately designed as a cost effective luminaire solution that does away with the need for an LED Driver. The eye-On has also been crafted to be versatile and can be used in multi, single circuit track or surface mounting which makes it perfect for many differing orientations and applications.
There are many SSL track spot and flood options on the market today, but most either use low voltage LED’s with a driver, or they use a retrofit LED lamp. The benefit of the eye-ON is that it uses an AC LED module which despite its compact form delivers much higher lumen packages akin to more commonly used high power LED modules and drivers.
By removing the external driver, the resulting luminaire design concentrates on the ergonomic aspect, in-space function and performance.
The LED module dictated the minimum size and shape of the luminaire but instead of camouflaging the shape of the LED module, the engineers in SLA’s Interior Architecture division embraced it, mimicking its asymmetry into the heat sink. The aesthetic is minimalist and provides an opportunity to add a simple but effective bracket facilitating track or surface mounting option. The result is a luminaire which is truly eye-catching.
The Concord Rotos received a Commendation in luminaire working model category.
The Concord Rotos spotlight springs from a highly regarded stable of luminaires with a long and eminently successful lineage. Born of decades of experience in the art of display and accent lighting, the Rotos compact spot is the first of a homogeneous family which is broad in range and application options. This ingenious contemporary design uses passive thermal control which optimises performance to provide effective accent lighting for a variety of interior spaces.
The Concord Rotos was born from the requirements of a leading retail customer to replace the existing Concord Motif Track Spot in 70 Watt Metal Halide with a more energy efficient light source. A main priority was to keep the aesthetics of the original product and recycle specific components to minimise product costs.
The design brief for the Rotos was very specific in that the new product needed to, at a minimum, match the optical results of the product that it was replacing. This included a precise beam angle, accurate light levels, specific colour temperature and minimum colour rendering levels. Additionally, the Rotos’ physical shape had to be a close match to the original clean “bean can” look of the Metal Halide product meaning no external or visible fins. Providing a heatsink capable of handling the rigorous thermal requirements within the set parameters with optimised LED life was extremely challenging.
The Rotos’ medium beam width of 32 degrees enables excellent general illumination of fresh food and produce as well as accent lighting of various retail goods such as fashion.
Using high efficacy LED allowed a reduction in energy from 70W to 36W as well as keeping a consistent level of light on the products with high CRI. This makes the Rotos an excellent solution for retail.
Recipients of the award on the night were Chief IA Product Engineer, Peter Attfield and Product Segment Manager Tony Chivers both of whom led the development of both products under the direction of Concord’s National Sales & marketing Manager, Mr Ian Bollom. Mr Chivers and Mr Attfield were accompanied on the night by SLA’s Executive General Manager, Mr Mark West.
