The EYE Twin Cera Arc metal halide lamp was recently specified as an optimal and cost effective solution, over available LED options, for an indoor sports complex.

An indoor sports complex recently engage a specialist energy saving consultancy firm to help wade through the challenges of upgrading their lighting system. The sports centre was concerned with rising energy bills and maintenance costs associated with their existing 400W Mercury Vapour high bay installation. The centre offers indoor cricket, soccer and netball, while outside beach volleyball is played.
Considerations for the new lighting design had to take into account lighting levels, light quality and uniformity required to meet the challenges associated with very fast moving balls, especially for indoor cricket. Part of the client’s brief also included that the new solution had to provide quality lighting from all angles, reduce glare, operate efficiently, provide safety and reliability as well as the ability to turn on and off quickly. All elements where many people assume LED would deliver an advantage over other light sources.
The Solution
After trialling various options, the client opted for a ceramic metal halide solution, specifically the EYE Twin Cera Arc lamp. The consultant worked closely with EYE Lighting and client to ensure the ceramic metal halide solution delivered maximum efficiency, excellent light quality and long life in hot operating conditions.
Additional benefits that the EYE Twin Cera Arc solution delivered includes increased colour rendering to assist the overall clarity and appearance when playing on the courts and a significant reduction in energy costs.
With a rated average lamp life of 50,000 hours, the lamp is on par with projected lifespans of modern LED installations. The added benefit is at end of life, the owner simply has to replace the lamps, not go through the whole process and expense of re-spec’ing an LED fixture or trying to find another LED fixture with the same output, colour temperature and colour rendering as the existing installation.
By combining the EYE Twin Cera Arc lamp with the SAW 412 luminaires, the number of fixtures required was reduced, however lighting levels were improved, colour rendering is greatly enhanced and the appeal of simply changing the lamp and end of life were far too appealing for the client to go with a LED solution.
Outcomes as reported by the client include:
- Light levels increased by 55%
- Reduction in kWh by 51%
- Reduction of Peak Load by 20kW
- Reduction in the number of fixtures used
- CO2 emission reduction by 35 tonnes
- 4 days to upgrade complete installation
