How to properly organise a tool box

Published: 19 July 2018 Category: Manufacturer News

In this article, we collaborate with RS Components to provide some top tips for organising your tool box and keeping your prized tools in top condition!

How to properly organise a tool box

Every tradesperson will be fully aware of the importance of properly looking after your tools. All tools need to be properly stored and well looked after so that they will continue to work and not deteriorate in quality over time. Unfortunately, many people do not know how to look after their tools which could prove to be very costly.

High-Quality Tool Box

First, you need to have a high-quality tool box where you can safely store all of your tools. The best tool boxes will have different compartments and areas for particular tools so that you can easily store, organise and protect every tool. Additionally, they will be easy to transport and have some form of lock so that they can be protected (criminals will target professionals tradesperson’s toolboxes as they know that they will contain high-value tools).

Organising a Tool Box

There is nothing worse than a messy toolbox when you are on the job as you want to be able to quickly find the tool you are after. To organise your tool box, lay out a big tarp or piece of cardboard and then lay everything out in a pile. It is likely that the tool box itself will be greasy, so give it a thorough clean both inside and out. You could then lay a piece of cardboard on the bottom to stop the bottom becoming greasy and to protect your tools.

You should then carefully clean and inspect each tool and throw out anything that is broken or any loose screws, washers etc. Once you have done this, you should create piles of similar tools and start to place them back into the toolbox in the right compartments and all facing the right way. If you have a lot of important bits and pieces, you could always invest in extra compartments to keep everything neat and tidy.

Specialist Tools

If you have any specialist or high-value tools, you may want to store them differently from your everyday ones. They may come with their own special casing, but for security, you may want to purchase a new one from a specialist like RS. Make sure that these tools are properly stored and looked after with regular cleaning so that they can continue to perform at a high level for a long time to come.

Organising tools may seem like a huge task, but it is actually quite simple once you have invested in a great tool box and you have thrown out anything that you do not need. It is simply a matter of keeping them clean after usage and putting them back in a neat and organised fashion and keeping your toolbox safe and secure at all times.
