Some of the nation’s best and brightest sparkies are gearing up for a State of Origin style clash at this year’s Master Electricians Australia (MEA) National Excellence Awards, after being recognised for their outstanding contributions to the industry.

Newcastle-based GB Electrical Contractors, in the business for 19 years, is the NSW/ACT’s finest Accredited Master Electrician of the Year.
Director Darren Andrews said he’s looking forward to the battle.
“We try to set ourselves apart from the competition by providing a comprehensive and really diverse range of electrical and mechanical services for industrial, commercial and domestic clients,” Mr Andrews said.
But Queensland’s winner, Brisbane-based Platinum Electrical, is proving quite the force to be reckoned with. The company has shown the entire state that it lives up to its ‘always on call, and doing it all’ mantra.
“There are a lot of top-notch contractors throughout Queensland and Australia but I’m confident we’ll give the other states a real run for their money at the national awards,” owner Aaron Cluff said.
But, while the rivalry between these two states remains unmatched, they’ll both be forced to deal with outstanding competitors from right across the nation.
In a true state vs state showdown, Western Australia’s winner reckons he’ll give both maroon and blue states a run for their money.
Brendan Balcombe kick-started Perth-based Aurora Electrical Service more than 12 years ago, and is hoping the company will take out the coveted national award, after being named WA’s Accredited Master Electrician of the Year.
“It’s such a reward because of the hard work and dedication our team puts in to upholding the values of a Master Electrician, especially when it comes to safety procedures,” Mr Balcombe said.
MEA WA State Manager Tony Mancini also weighed in, and said the awards were a wonderful opportunity to recognise outstanding quality, attention to detail and high standards of professionalism within the industry.
“We were thrilled to see so many nominations from WA sparkies who are excelling in all of these areas and really raising the bar. Winners from the other states are going to have a really tough time knocking our contractors off the podium,” Mr Mancini said.
But Victoria’s AF Electrical and Smokeshield Managing Director Frank Spiteri said, when ‘game night’ arrives, he’s determined his team will be on the dais.
The company prides itself on being personal, reliable and innovative, but is also an industry-leader when it comes to the social media side of business.
“Our business has been serving Melbourne’s suburbs for years, but our customer service has also evolved in that time to incorporate changing technology. We blog, we tweet, we Facebook, but we’ve also maintained our old-fashioned face-to face service, so we’re able to stay in touch with our clients’ needs, no matter how they like to stay in touch,” he said.
National winners in the Master Electrician of the Year will be announced at MEA’s annual Excellence Awards, during its 2014 Electrical Industry Conference at Noosa on September 27, alongside winners in six other categories.
