Photoluminescent signs

Published: 24 February 2014 Category: Trade Talk
Question from Voltimum user: I have heard that the 2014 edition of the National Construction Code will allow Photoluminescent Exit Signs to be used in place of conventional powered Exits.

Can I replace an existing exit sign with a photoluminescent sign and are there any other things that need to be considered?
Photoluminescent signs

Answer provided by John McKenna, Technical Manager at Stanilite.

Under the proposed changes in the National Construction Code (NCC), it is possible to replace an existing powered Exit sign with a Photoluminescent (PLM) Exit sign however, as a minimum, the following criteria must be addressed in order for compliance with the NCC and AS2293 to be maintained -

1. The PLM Exit sign must meet the performance and size requirements that are stipulated in the NCC

2. A dedicated permanently illuminated light source will be required to be installed that will provide a minimum of 100 lux across the face of the PLM sign at all times.

3. Where the PLM sign is replacing a conventional exit sign either over an exit door, or at a position where there is a change of direction on the escape path, the existing Emergency Lighting installation will need to be reviewed. AS2293 requires that an Emergency Luminaire be located within 2 metres of these positions, and a conventional powered exit sign will almost always have an emergency classification which satisfies this requirement. A PLM Exit sign cannot be classified as an Emergency Luminaire, so If there are no emergency luminiares within 2 metres of these positions, an emergency luminaire will also need to be installed within 2 metres of the PLM Exit sign.
