In an industry first, leading major players within the electrical field; Legrand, Clipsal and Eaton, joined SAI Global and Electrical Connection in a panel discussion about how the new Standards are determined and the impact this has on how electricians conduct their work.

As an Australian Industries Group representative of the EL-001 committee responsible for the changes to the standards for installation requirements, Legrand’s Technical Director, Dennis Galvin, discusses these important changes, particularly with regards to Chapter Two and Chapter Four. The key topics for each of these Chapters include:

Chapter Two: How electrical circuits should be arranged, controlled and protected to ensure safety

  • Requirements for Residual Current Devices (RCDs).

  • Arc Fault Detection Devices.

  • Electric vehicle charging.

  • The arrangement of neutrals for Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection (RCBOs).

  • Switchboard access.

Chapter Four: The selection and installation of electrical equipment to ensure safety

  • Overseas outlets.

  • Recessed luminaires.

  • Isolation issues.

The panel discussion revealed that various projects will be completed differently. While some jobs may take longer, incur different costs, or require a different product, the 2018 Edition will undoubtedly improve safety, helping the industry take positive steps towards improving safety and wellbeing for everyone.
