Mercury is used in the production of products such as linear fluorescent tubes, energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps, High Pressure Sodium, Metal Halide and Mercury Vapour lamps. Mercury is the most hazardous metal on the EPA’s list of industrial pollutants. It is a very potent neurotoxin to humans. The largest source of mercury pollution entering our landfills is from the dumping of mercury containing fluorescent tubes and HID lamps. Australian’s consume 50 to 60 million fluorescent tubes and HID lamps every year. Less than 1% of these are recycled leaving more than 99% being dumped in landfill sites across Australia. With our knowledge of the harm mercury does to humans and the environment coupled with the high volumes of lamps we utilise/replace each year, it is imperative we follow responsible, sustainable methods of disposal. Recovery and recycling is the only safe, efficient and effective way to reduce current levels of mercury in our environment. Recycling the materials used in lamps and luminaires has numerous environmental benefits from: • Saving landfill space for genuine, non-recyclable waste • Reducing greenhouse gas production • Reducing seapage of harmful chemicals & metals into our soil • Reducing contamination of our waterways Certificate of Recycling Excellence SYLrecycle have engaged the services of CMAecocyle to execute this recycling service, and as the only approved and recognised processing and recycling centre for handling mercury bearing wastes, they will issue, with each load, a recycling certificate to you for your comfort and audit approval. SYLVANIA utilises a state-of-the-art crushing, separating, cleaning and recycling facility. Once the lamps reach the recycling depots, they follow the below process: Introducing SYLrecycle: In order to provide a wholistic service to our customers, Sylvania Lighting Australasia has developed a recycling initiative to facilitate the recycling of lamps. Sylvania has engaged the services of CMAecocycle to perform this recycling function. When the starter contacts open the ballast supplies the starting voltage. Reliable starting is from -5°C to +50°C.
