What is Smart? The world’s ever increasing demand for energy is rapidly changing our environment and the need for energy efficiency in every aspect of ourdaily lives has never been greater. The Thorlux Smart System combines the latest “Digital Technology” to provide a simple, effective method of lighting control which minimises energy consumption whilst retaining high levels of user comfort. A discrete sensor integral to the luminaire monitors ambient light and presence, to control output to the correct level, and to ensure thatthe area is only illuminated when occupied. Lighting can account for a high percentage of energy consumed withina building, especially if uncontrolled discharge luminaires or old technology switch start luminaires are installed. Savings by installation of automatic lighting control systems can reach 70%. save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment save energy save money save environment T T H H O O R R L L U U X X C C O O M M M M E E R R C C I I A A L L S S M M A A R RT T An energy saving lighting control system for fluorescent lamps 3 2

Each luminaire in the Thorlux Smart System measures and adjusts independently according to the ambient light in its immediate surroundings. This provides good uniformity across the working planeeven in situations where the natural daylight ingress is varied across the area. Bright out feature In the event of excess natural light, for more than 10 minutes, the Smart luminaire will switch off completely, saving a further 20% energy and prolonging lamp life. Maintained illuminance Accumulation of dirt and lamp lumen depreciation causes light loss and uncontrolled schemes are initially ‘overlit’ to compensate, resulting in wasted energy over the maintenance cycle. The Thorlux Smart System avoids this waste of energy and over lighting by allowing installations to be initially dimmed to the requiredlight level. If any one luminaire detects movement all connected luminaireswithin the group will illuminate. This valuable feature is designed toeliminate the possibility of a user being isolated in a small pool oflight, surrounded by intimidating darkness. The Motionline ensuresthat there will always be a well lit comfortable environment. Once the last person leaves an area the luminaire waits for a pre-programmed period before switching off or dimming to a userpre-defined level. A manual override facility can be provided. Operation Energy savings accrue primarily due to the grouped luminaires not being illuminated during periods of non-occupation,but the adaptable Smart system can be programmed using the“Smart-Programmer” to offer other energy saving and safety orientated configurations. Luminaires within a group are programmable individually and may be set to dim to any chosenlevel between 1 and 100% rather than to extinguish after the time-out period. Some luminaires may be programmed to stay on,after the time-out period at a high level of illumination for pilotlighting purposes. The Smart sensor detects small movements at mounting heightsup to 4 metres and large movements at mounting heights up to 10metres. Absence detection The Thorlux Smart System can also be programmed for absence detection only. A switch connected to theMotionline is required to turn an installation on but if the room isleft unoccupied the lights will automatically switch off after the pre-determined time. Without Motionline each luminaire will only turn on if a person is withinits immediate area. Figure 2: Modular wiring With Motionline a group of luminaires can be switched on when any onesensor detects movement. By isolating the Motionline signal (see Figure 1)separate zones can be achieved whilst using a common mains supply. For modular wiring use the Signal-Isolator ( LCM 10803 ) which permits mains supply from adjacent zone whilst isolating the Motionline controlsignal (see Figure 2). Manual dimming via switch Any number of retractive switches can be connected to the Motionline to provide group dimming control of the Smart luminaires. In normal operation the Smart luminaires will be automatically adjustingtheir own luminance level to suit their local immediate requirement. When controlled via the switch all the luminaires will initially synchroniseto the same lighting level which can then be varied from 100% to 1% andoff. Group dimming control is activated by pressing and holding theswitch. Once the area is vacated and the installation has subsequently turned off,the system will revert to automatic mode. Automatic mode can also be selected by one single momentary press of the switch. The Smart-Remote can be used to dim and switch individual luminaires or the group as a whole. It provides full control with on, off, raise and lowerfeatures. The Smart-Remote is supplied with a wall mounting bracket. A locking key kit ECO 9724 is available if required . Smart-Remote LCM 13479 A 6-way mains plug with 4 core input lead LCM 12749B - 3m B 6-way mains/control lead LCM 11030B - 4m Features programmable during commissioning G No presence delay After a delay which is variable between 30 secondsand 1 hour the luminaires will go to the area vacant condition. Factory setting - 10 minutes. G Area vacant condition Off or minimum level. Factory setting - off. G Security setting delay This allows an interim delay (30 seconds to 1 hour, or continuous) at a selected level (anywhere between minimumand maximum) following no presence detection and prior to the area vacant condition. Factory setting - disabled. For example, all luminaires in a building may be set to switch off except for exit routes which will reduce to 50%, for a further hour (assuming no presence detected). Alternatively as a security feature, perhaps 1 in 20 lights may be kept on continuously at any chosen level. G Light level setting Completely variable or may be set to maximum continuously. G Bright out setting Lamps will be switched off (particularly those nearest the window) if excess daylight is present for more than 10 minutes. Luminaires can also be programmed to simply dim and not switch off. G Automatic setting retention If lighting is manually overridden,e.g. for a presentation, following a subsequent area vacant switch off, the system will revert back to automatic mode. It may alternativelybe set to retain manually overridden settings. Installation commissioning using the Smart-Programmer LCM 10777 6 Modular wiring offers significant savings on installation costs andalso enables easy reconfiguration of the layout should the workingarea change. Typically the installation of 25 recessed XL-Five Smart luminaires would take 2 contractors just 2 hours to complete.

West Kirby Grammar School for Girls, UK Wirral Borough Council has recently undertaken the refurbishment of thelighting in the laboratories at West Kirby Grammar School for Girls. The old 2 x 58W T8 batten luminaires have been replaced on a one for onebasis by 2 x 49W T5 Smart Jubilee luminaires. The change of luminaire type alone resulted in a 25% reduction in loadwith no change to the general light level. Depending upon ambient daylight, each luminairewill brighten or dim independently to maintain a pre-set light level. Should ambient daylight exceed the programmed level for more than tenminutes the individual luminaires, due to the Thorlux “bright out” functionality, will switch off until ambient light levels drop once morebelow the pre-set level. Data Logging A data logger connected to a CT Clamp was used to monitor the currentdrawn by the lights. It recorded at 2 minute intervals and was left in place, during late October (Autumn), for 7 days. A 75% average energy saving was achieved, with 82% saved on the bestday and 60% on the worst. Control Gear All standard control gear is of high quality, supplied by European manufacturers and is generally ENEC approved. High frequency fluorescent control gear is warm start for extended lamp life. Installation and Maintenance Instruction leaflets for all luminaires are available by download from www.thorlux.com.au Materials and Finishes Steel - Sheet steel is generally 0.7mm minimum zinc coated and may be finished in fullpolyester non-colour degrading powder coat. Aluminium - Louvres/reflectors are anodised aluminium in specular or satin finish. Castingsand extrusions unless specifically detailed are of alloys chosen as most satisfactory for theirpurpose. Finishes may be surface modification pre-treatment or anodising and/or full noncolour degrading polyester powder coat.Controllers - Polycarbonate and acrylic controllers are UV stabilised. Polycarbonate controllers comply with the 850 degree hot wire test as specified in IEC60695-2-12.Fasteners - External fasteners are generally stainless steel. Standards All luminaires comply with AS/NZ 60598, are classified for ingress protection (IP code) as indicated and F marked (suitable for mounting on combustible surfaces) where appropriate.
