Prysmian Group gears up for NBN in Dee Why

Prysmian Group today welcomed Federal Broadband and Communications Minister Stephen Conroy to its Dee Why complex to open the newly-upgraded facility, which will produce the underground fibre optic cable required for the NBN.

“We are delighted to welcome the Minister and equally pleased to be producing world-class fibre optic ribbon cable that is core to the NBN plan to deliver high-speed broadband to every home and business across the country” said Prysmian Group CEO Llyr Roberts.

“We are currently producing 100 kilometres of fibre-optic ribbon cable per month here at Dee Why and this will increase to 300 kilometres per month by September, with substantial increases to follow” Roberts said.

“We are well on time and within budget,” he added.

The distinctive green NBN Co, fibre optic cable manufactured at Prysmian’s Dee Why facility will initially be rolled out in NSW, Queensland, ACT, NT and Western Australia.

More than eleven million dollars has been spent on the plant where an additional 50 staff will be employed.

“We will be manufacturing a wide range of ribbon and multi-fibre optic cables including termite resistant, rodent-proof and high strength cables” said Roberts.

Through its partnership with NBN Co, Prysmian Group is helping the Australian Government achieve its vision of a next generation broadband network and will be an integral part of the largest nation building infrastructure project in Australia’s history.

It’s good news to be at the centre of such a massive project” Roberts concluded.
